Several unforeseen twists came during Invincible season 2, part 1 that provided viewers with some surprising reveals and teases for the future. Invincible has never shied away from shocking its audience, whether they have read the Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley comics or are brand new to Mark Grayson's story. The shock value of Omni-Man killing the Guardians of the Globe in the first episode was only a taste of what would come, as the show frequently explores the reasons behind seemingly unexpected character decisions. Unsurprisingly, Invincible season 2 offers even more twists.
The actual story in Invincible season 2 is quite different from what the first season explored, as Mark Grayson, Omni-Man, Atom Eve, and other characters have new challenges. While the series is quite faithful to the comics that inspired it, there have still been opportunities for massive twists and surprises to arrive through the narrative. This includes a number of Invincible comics changes, and some of them are quite surprising in terms of what happens in season 2 and what it could mean for the future. For a variety of reasons, the first four episodes managed to shock viewers through a handful of moments.

6 Cecil May Be Working Against Mark
Season 2, Episode 2, "In About Six Hours, I Lose My Virginity to a Fish"
One of the biggest twists in Invincible season 2 part 1 comes with the tease that Cecil may be working against Mark. This reveal comes through Mark's fight with a kaiju underwater, as Cecil discovers one of Mark's weaknesses is the loud noise the monster creates. The Global Defense Agency's director then curiously orders for the sound to be studied. While it is not specified why Cecil wants to study the sound, finding a way to replicate something that weakens a Viltrumite would line up with Cecil's history. Season 1 showed Cecil testing Mark's blood, providing a hint of them looking for ways to defeat Viltrumites after Omni-Man's evil turn.

Although Nolan is gone, Cecil never leaves anything to chance, which means taking every precautionary measure he can to stop any threat to Earth. It is quite possible this now includes the seemingly good-hearted hero Invincible. Mark has not proven to be a threat to Earth or humanity at this point, but his willingness to disobey Cecil's orders only creates more distrust between them. It is through this twist that a future conflict between Cecil and Mark could begin and reshape where their relationship stands in future seasons.

Most were surprised to see Donald alive in Invincible season 2 considering how dead he appeared to be after facing Omni-Man in season 1. However, part 1's episodes give Donald a major role that includes exploring the fact that he is alive, somehow, despite having died in the past. It's a twist that is so potentially confusing to audiences that even Donald does not initially understand how he is alive after seeing the footage of his death. The explanation for how the GDA agent is alive is not detailed so far, but the show has a chance to deliver another Donald surprise later on based on the comics' answer.

The full introduction of the Viltrumites in Invincible season 2, part 1 likely caught viewers off-guard. Despite having plenty of previous teases that the powerful alien race was a ruthless race hellbent on taking over the galaxy, it wasn't until episode 3 of season 2 that these stakes became more personal. This was shown through the merciless assault on Allen the Alien that seemingly ended with his demise. The powers displayed as they attacked the Coalition of Planets made their threats much more realized, and the swiftness at which the attack comes in an otherwise light-hearted glimpse into Allen's life made it surprising.

As if the Viltrumites' power was not already confirmed, the fight against Nolan and Mark in Invincible season 2, part 1's ending further proved what they were capable of. They killed off most of the Thraxans and beat Nolan and Mark within an inch of their lives. This included Lucan returning to break Nolan's back even with his guts exposed. As if that was not enough, the Viltrumites also made sure to let Mark know that they still intend to conquer Earth. Worse yet, they have now tasked him with helping them take the planet over, meaning that this can go from bad to worse.

3 Allen The Alien's Apparent Death
Season 2, Episode 3, "This Missive, This Machination!"
Viewers were treated to another twist when Allen the Alien seemingly died in Invincible season 2, episode 3. The fight against the Viltrumites proved how ruthless they are, as they appeared to kill the fun-loving intergalactic ally for Mark. Seeing him get an unexpected no-holds-barred beatdown was certainly unexpected, as too was the reveal that he did not die. The twists continued to come as Thaedus turned off the machine helping Allen recover, indicating that Thaedus' work for the Coalition of Planets could be for evil. Whether Allen fully recovers or not is an answer for Invincible to provide later on.

2 Evil Mark Grayson Exists
Season 2, Episode 1, "A Lesson For Your Next Life"
A scary hypothetical is realized in Invincible season 2's premiere with a glimpse of an evil Mark Grayson from a different universe. This version of Mark worked with Nolan to take over Earth and prepare it for the Viltrumite's takeover. It was a revelation filled with unexpected moments, including this evil Mark paralyzing Atom Eve instead of killing her. Of course, the evil Mark Grayson tease had greater importance, as it helped introduce season 2's new villain, Angstrom Levy. By showing the damage that evil Mark is capable of, Angstrom Levy's view of the hero is understandably quite different.

1 Omni-Man Reunites With Mark
Season 2, Episode 3, "This Missive, This Machination!"
Omni-Man and Invincible's reunion was inevitable, but it came as a surprise that he reunited with his son in Invincible season 2, episode 3's cliffhanger. While it had been several months since Nolan nearly beat Mark to death, it was shocking to see him send for his son so quickly. It is yet to be clear if Omni-Man is a changed man or someone who simply needed Mark's help against the Viltrumites. Still, it's clear that he genuinely loved his son enough that he chose him over fulfilling his mission to take over Earth and shows that Invincible won't always take too much time to get to its climactic moments.
